When we were first starting TYPros, I remember going around the room and discussing what each person wanted to accomplish and/or why we were interested in joining the organization. My answer was that if I was going to live in Tulsa and build my own business here, then I bought off on the mission of making it a place that would attract young talent.
In addition, I have always had an interest in entrepreneurship and starting new businesses because it requires creativity, innovation and energy. Plus, there is just something cool about starting with a blank sheet of paper, then looking up several years later at a successful company.
Enter The Forge. When we surveyed and explored potential projects for the Business Development Crew, we kept getting feedback around Tulsa that led us to try and create a successful incubator. Along the way, we had many struggles…a lack of knowledge, a place to put it, local politics and a lack of resources just to name a few.
However, when I was running my crew meetings the idea just wouldn’t completely go away. Then we had a breakthrough when we were offered some undeveloped temporary office space where we were able to “beta test” the idea. That led to enough success that we were eventually able to acquire permanent space and we have thrived ever since.
For me personally, it has been great experience for me as I have been able to work on such a cool project. It allowed me to contribute something tangible and sustainable to Tulsa while allowing me to work with creative young entrepreneurs, which is right in my wheelhouse. I look forward to working with the Forge in various capacities in the future as we try to build on what we have created so far, and eventually become a world class business incubator.
